Capital Oil Refining Industries (Cori) has donated K500,000 and cooking oil towards World Sports Journalists Day’s celebrations scheduled for Salima on August 5.
Part of the donation will be given to Salima District Hospital as part of celebrations which Sports Writers Association (Swam) will host.
Handing over the donation on Friday, Cori Human Resources and Administration Manager, Alex Chisiano, said the gesture was part of the company’s commitment to supporting sports in the country.
“Cori values sports and has passion for sports. As you know, we provide sponsorship to a netball team, Kukoma Diamonds, and support other sporting disciplines such as tennis, golf and volleyball. Supporting sports activities without writers is [an] incomplete [mission] so, to make it more enjoyable, we need coverage to reach more people,” Chisiano said.
Swam President, Peter Kanjere, hailed Cori for the donation and appealed for more support from other well-wishers.
“Kukoma is a big brand in Malawi and for them to assist us gives us encouragement that we will manage to raise K10 million that is required for us to hold the celebrations. As sports writers, we contribute to sports development and we ask companies and individuals to show their appreciation to our profession by contributing to this big day, which will give us an opportunity to take stock of our profession,” he said.
