The ruling Democratic Progress Party (DPP) continues to abuse government resources as it Thursday grabbed a Mzimba Prison vehicle to ferry its supporters from Mabilabo and Khosolo to Mzimba Boma.
The party loyalists were attending a rally conducted by President Peter Mutharika who also officially launched the Integrated Urban Water and Sanitation Project by the Northern Region Water Board.
The vehicle, registration number PS 022 arrived at the venue loaded with party supporters chanting songs praising Mutharika.
When questioned on the matter, Home Affairs Minister, Grace Chiumia, said she was not aware of the development, arguing that DPP does not ferry people from places far from where it is holding its rallies.
But speaking in an interview with The Daily Times, one of the passengers from the vehicle, whose name we have withheld for her own protection, said the vehicle picked them from Mzimba South Constituency which belongs to DPP Member of Parliament (MP) Deliwe Ng’oma.
“The vehicle came to take us at around 10 am and we have travelled well. We thank our party leaders for the transport because we would not have managed to come here and sing for our President,” said the excited supporter.
Chiumia, however, insisted that people who came to the rally were from around Mzimba Boma and that no government vehicle was used to take people to the gathering.
The minister’s sentiments contradict the party’s actions by far as there was a similar situation in Chitipa on Tuesday where people were drawn from as far as Rumphi District to the presidential function.
The Mzimba function, nonetheless, almost degenerated into a party event as the DPP Secretary General, Greselder Jeffrey, welcomed about 10 people led by Mzimba South Constituency legislator, Makwenda Chunga, who have defected to the blue camp from the former ruling People’s Party (PP).
Jeffrey took to the microphone to castigate former president, Joyce Banda, calling her uncompassionate.
“Joyce Banda is one of the inconsiderate people to have graced the face of earth. But I want to assure all PP supporters that the DPP doors are open. Come and work with the government of the day,” she said.
She also hit at main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president, Lazarus Chakwera, that he will never rule this country because God turned his back on him [Chakwera] for abandoning pastoral work for politics back in 2013.
Social commentator, Moses Mkandawire, of the Church and Society of Livingstonia Synod has denounced the DPP’s conduct, saying it reflects badly on the government.
“Everybody knows that the Department of Prisons has already few vehicles, why is DPP abusing such departments which are already financially crippled?” queried Mkandawire.
Commenting on the defections PP Administrative Secretary, Joseph Chikwemba, said it is unfortunate that after enjoying all the support from [Joyce] Banda, Chunga and team have decided to pay her back in such a manner.
