Lilongwe-based group Madalitso Band, the duo of Yobu Maligwa and Yosefe Kalekeni, is slowly attracting the interest of many festivals, the latest being that they will perform at this year’s Harare International Festival of the Arts (Hifa) in Zimbabwe.
This is one of the top festivals in Zimbabwe and brings together artists from different countries.
The festival will be held from May 1 to May 6.
Reports of Madalitso Band’s participation at Hifa comes barely a week after The Daily Times also revealed that the group is set to perform at The Roskilde Festival in June this year.
Roskilde is a Danish music festival held annually south of Roskilde. It is one of the largest music festivals in Europe.
“As we indicated earlier, this will be a busy year for Madalitso Band. I can confirm that Madalitso Band will perform at Hifa,” Emmanuel Kamwenje, one of the co-managers,said.
Madalitso Band, which was not well known until last year when they performed at Sauti za Busara Festival in Tanzania, also has performances in Europe this year.
“Hifa is a top festival and for them to get a slot is something special. It’s all about representing Malawi and showing the best of the country’s music,” Kamwenje said.
Maligwa and Kalekeni said over the weekend that they were happy that doors were opening for them and owed this to their managers, Neil Nayar and Kamwenje.
“Our managers have been very helpful and God should really bless them. We are excited with these opportunities and we will continue to bring out the best,” Kalekeni said.
Last weekend, the duo performed at Kayesa Ground in Mchinji District during the free Ethno Malawi concert organised by Music Crossroads Malawi and other partners.
Although it took time for the duo to start their performance due to a prolonged sound check, the group did their best and conquered as they also dropped a new song.
The duo said they are working on an album and that a few tracks would be released soon.
“The album has no name yet and we are not sure if it will be an album or just a few tracks. At the moment, the songs are being mixed and we are optimistic people will love them,” Kamwenje said.
Madalitso Band has one album to their credit, Fungo La Nyemba.
Kamwenje said they have festivals in France which are confirmed but they will announce more news later.
And the pot of glory for festivals has also not eluded the group in the country as the duo are also set to perform at this year’s Lake of Stars Festival to be held at Kabumba Hotel in Salima District from September 28 to 30.
Madalitso Band is also geared to perform at Ntchisi Forest Festival and, according to Kamwenje, they are just waiting to sign the agreement
