The National Audit Office(Nao) has suspended Chief Auditor for the Eastern Region for allegedly misappropriating money amounting to K34 million.
The Daily Times has learnt that the Chief Auditor, Bright Kamwaza, along with the accountant Alick Chinyozi and secretary Dofa Mbengo opened several accounts which they allegedly used to siphon the money.
An inside source who opted for anonymity has confided in The Daily Times that Kamwaza, who works for Zomba National Audit Office, allegedly gave himself money amounting to K1 million as allowances for 66 nights in July.
The Audi tor General, Stephenson Kaphasa, confirmed the suspension but did not divulge more details, saying the matter is still under investigation.
“We noticed that he was failing to run the office properly. It was something to do with administrative issues. We have not come to the details of everything but once we have done that, we will take appropriate measures and we will also, come back to you as newsmen,” Kamphasa said.
Nao Public Relations Officer, Rabson Kagwamminga, said his office was informed of the alleged financial mismanagement through an email sent to the Auditor General on August 13 this year by a concerned member of staff at the regional office in Zomba.
“The email did not provide the composite amount involved but only a number of specific incidences and their corresponding figures, hence cannot confirm the accuracy of the amount quoted in your question. That can only be established after we are done with the investigations. At the moment, the officer has been sent on leave to facilitate smooth investigations into the matter,” explained Kagwamminga in his response to our questionnaire.
