Former Nigerian international Yakubu Ayegbeni is expected to arrive in Malawi today on Fifa Foundation duties to assess football facilities that were destroyed by floods, that killed 60 people and displacing 900,000.
Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Competitions and Media Director, Gomezgani Zakazaka, said Yakubu— who played for English top teams Portsmouth, Middlesborough, Everton and Blackburn Rovers— would, alongside Fifa delegates, hold football clinics and assess the damage the floods caused to football infrastructure of Shire Valley districts of Chikwawa and Nsanje.
“Following the assessment, they are going to see how best to assist to ensure that football infrastructure is renovated in those areas. This delegation was in Mozambique and will proceed to Zimbabwe,” Zakazaka said.
“We hope that upon inspection, they would return to assist us. The visit is timely as you are aware that, part of the community centre ground has been turned into a camp.”
