Renowned actor and comedian Eric Mabedi, popularly known as Jakobo, has been appointed the chairperson the Copyright Society of Malawi (Cosoma) board.
Mabedi, who is also National Theatre Association of Malawi (Ntam) president and Kwathu Drama Group director, takes over from musician Charles Sinetre,
A press statement from the Office of the President and Cabinet says President Peter Mutharika has appointed and approved the appointment of the new board members and reconstituted the board of directors for the various statutory corporations.
The appointments are with effect from July 1 2018.
Mabedi leads a board which has members such as Reverend Charles Mawaya, musician and producer and former Member of Parliament Joseph Tembo, Sinetre, Reverend Catherine Jailosi and musician Kendall Kamwendo.
Mabedi said on Tuesday he was humbled to be appointed board chairperson for Cosoma.
The others, who make up the board, are Secretary for Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development (Ex- Officio), Controller of Statutory Corporations (Ex-Officio), Solicitor General (Ex-Officio) and Secretary for Education, Science and Technology (Ex- Officio).
Musicians Union of Malawi president, Reverend Chimwemwe Mhango and Rudo Mkukupha Chakwera, who were in the previous board have been booted out.
Mhango and Chakwera, were on the list of the four names that were submitted to the government following their election during the Cosoma Annual General Meeting (AGM) in November last year.
The four names that were elected during a tense election at Grace Bandawe in Blantyre were those of Mhango, Kamwendo, Chakwera and Tembo.
Tembo and Kamwendo are the only names who have made it in the board.
Sinetre, who has also made it in the board and was the chairperson of the previous board, failed to make the list during the AGM.
The Cosoma board comprises three members representing musicians and two representatives of the rights holder associations.
Cosoma Senior Licensing Officer, Rosario Kamanga, said on Monday they were yet to get official communication on the appointment of the board.
Cosoma was established in 1992 under Section 41 of the Copyright Act.
