Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC) has called on President Peter Mutharika to appoint people with clean record and vision in his Cabinet so that Malawi should develop.
On Sunday, Mutharika promised to name his 20-member Cabinet by June 21 2019 when the budget meeting of Parliament opens.
Mutharika said people should be patient as he is doing background work on the appointments, which, he said, would reflect representation of the youth, gender and private sector.
HRCC Chairperson, Robert Mkwezalamba, said Mutharika must ensure political inclusivity in his Cabinet by including members from Malawi Congress Party, UTM, United Democratic Front, People’s Party and Mbakuwaku Movement for Development.
“Mutharika should appreciate the concerns his opponents or those who did not vote for him raised even before the polls. He needs to remove the element of politics as he has declared that he is not for politics but development,” he said.
“The youth needs consideration, so too persons with disability such as persons with albinism. Long standing citizens need consideration in boards or State entities as a way of promoting patriotism. Malawi should dissolve into massive inclusive growth away from politics and the time is now.”
Gender activists have also urged Mutharika to consider more women in his Cabinet.
Mutharika’s last 20-member Cabinet had three women.
