The body of former Cabinet minister and Press Corporation Limited (PCL) Plc group chief executive officer (CEO), Matthews Chikaonda, will not arrive from the United States (US) Thursday as arranged, one of the funeral ceremony organisers and close friend, Charles Chuka, said Tuesday.
He attributed the development to a ‘technical hitch’.
The body of Chikaonda, who died in the US on October 30, was initially scheduled to arrive in the country Thursday, with burial set for Friday.
But Chuka said circumstances beyond control have forced organisers to revise the programme.
“The movement of the body of Matthews [Chikaonda] from the US has encountered a technical hitch. The programme is being revised and the public will be informed of the revised programme soon,” Chuka said.
Before his death at Loma Linda University Medical Centre in California— where he succumbed to metastatic colorectal cancer after battling it for two years— the eminent economist held many key positions in the country in both the public and private sector.
Among other roles, he served as Reserve Bank of Malawi deputy governor before being promoted to governor. He was later appointed Finance minister by former president Bakili Muluzi in 2000, before being appointed as PCL group CEO in April 2002, a position he held until he retired on December 31 2016.
