Missi Kathumba on Saturday reminded spectators and other cyclists in Zomba that he is one of the country’s greatest cyclists.
Kathumba successfully cycled through the rough terrains of Zomba Plateau during the Winter Mountain Bike Series.
The series, which began in April, saw cyclists from different parts of the country competing to be crowned overall winner.
It was a neck-to-neck race between Kathumba and Blantyre Cycling Club cyclist, Steven Nazombe, who was trailing behind with a few seconds.
However, after all points were calculated from the beginning, Kathumba emerged the overall winner of the men’s long route race.
Kathumba said he was happy to be crowned the winner.
“I am very happy with the result. I trained hard to be victorious and it has paid off,” Kathumba said.
Steven Nazombe, who emerged the overall third in the competition, thanked companies such as HTD/ Kia Motors, PG Glass and Hotel Masongola for supporting the competition and urged other companies to follow suit.
“These competitions will help put Malawi on the map but only if companies sponsor these type of competitions” Nazombe said.
Paul Kennedy, who is the organiser of the series, thanked sponsors.
Kennedy further hinted that the series will be bigger next year.
Speaking on behalf of HTD/Kia Motors, Nathan Thomas assured cyclists of the company’s continued support to the series next year.
“We will continue supporting the series because proceeds from the race are aimed at improving the lives of those in rural areas as well as conserving forests in the country,” Thomas said
