Malawi Bureau of standards (MBS) and the Pharmacy and Poisons Board are looking into Revin, the famous energy drink men have taken to like ducks to water because of its medicinal properties that allegedly “energise men in bed”.
The decision to start scrutinising Revin in Malawi by the two authorities comes following the decision by Zambian authorities to suspend the manufacturing and distribution of Revin until investigations are concluded on whether it contains Viagra as reported.
The Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority, and Zambia Bureau of Standards have instituted investigations on the Natural Power High Energy Drink which is alleged to contain sildenafil citrate (Viagra).
The probe comes about following reports from Uganda that the energy drink Natural Power SX may contains sildenafil citrate to treatment of erectile dysfunction in men.
Unverified reports from Uganda say that a man had a six hour erection after drinking Revine, this is what prompted the investigations.
According to a statement issued to the media in Zambia, the three institutions are working together to ascertain the claims made about the product.
Malawi is one of the countries that is heavily consuming the energy drink and authorities this week said they are working together to deal with the situation.
MBS acting Director General Willie Muyila while saying that he is aware about the product ban in Zambia said that since Revine has some medicinal properties the poisons board were the right authorities to comment.
“However, we are working with the [poisons board on the matter and planning a press statement for the general public,” he said.
Pharmarceutical Society of Malawi Secretary, Josiah Mayani, said: “Revin is not registered with us as a drug but MBS just like any other drink.”
Meanwhile officers from the three Zambian institutions are on the ground to collect samples of the raw materials and of the finished product for analytical tests that will determine if there is any truth to the claims being made.
They said the outcome of this investigation will be communicated to the public as soon as results are released.
In view of the foregoing, the three institutions have urged the public to immediately desist from consuming the drink until conclusive results are released that either confirm or dismiss the allegations.
Meanwhile, the manufacturers of the product, Revin Zambia Limited based in the Copperbelt city of Ndola, have been ordered to halt the production and distribution of the energy drink until all investigations have been concluded and appropriate action taken.
